Our Priority The Alliance for Better Medicine was created to ensure that the evolving concept of “Evidence Based Medicine” is implemented in a way that protects appropriate, individualized healthcare for patients, and encourage health policies which not only aim to treat the whole person, but also focus on improving patient outcomes. We research and encourage promising practices such as care management, the integration of mental and physical health care, outcomes research, patient-centered care and medical homes. We believe, simply, that by providing people with the best care, including primary and secondary prevention, and the right treatments at the right time, that we can not only make people healthier but at the same time we can reduce their long-term healthcare spending. Our Philosophy: The Alliance for Better Medicine believes in policies which focus on individualized healthcare and care of the whole patient. The Alliance is wary of policies and analyses which examine particular procedures, treatments, or classes of medicine without considering the impact on other costs and services. The Issue: Appropriate evidence based medicine, which the Alliance for Better Medicine supports, has been defined by David Sackett as “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient.” However, in efforts to manage costs, the term evidence based medicine has more recently been used to justify restrictive policies which do not consider the specific needs of the individual patient or the clinical experience of the physician. The Solution: The Alliance for Better Medicine works by educating the public, healthcare consumers, and policy makers to ensure that health policies protect individualized medical care, and that cost-effectiveness or value in healthcare is determined by the total costs of treatment throught the course of an illness, or over the life of a patient or healthcare consumer.
